Gourd Projects-'09
Starting with some masks

  Back to Fun Stuff List

Step 1 - Cut Gourd - Green wasn't my prefered color choice, but we'll see how it turns out.

The mask design is drawn out and inked.

The lines are gone over with a dremel tool for definition and edging.

The texture pattern is also cut in. This part isn't done yet. Need to finish off the area at the bottom and on the left far side.

The texture pattern is finished off. Now we wait for the dyes to arrive in the mail.
Sooo, Red on a Green background makes.....brown? The first color goes on.
I try to fudge the yellow, but it looks pale yellow/green - this will take some work to fix.

The dye work is done for now. Now I have to decide if the eyes stay green or if I cut them out and put Onyx disks in them for eyes. Also not sure if I should leave the texture green or brown it over.

Next will be a varnish and then the feathers and quills - also ordered online and headed this way.

(For those of you that are uncomfortable with masks, the technical term for feathers and quills is actually Feathers of Death and Scarey Death Sticks).

Another layer of ink dyes and some sealer - finally its not so green.
This is how the quills will look (not in yet - these are hair quills).

Next Gourd Project - Glass Inlay!
First I pick out a penguin gourd

Then I draw out the pattern on the gourd.

I'll carved out the sections that get the glass and stone inlays.

Next I choose dye and glass colors and do the stone inlay.

Stone inlay is added to the area on the bottom. It has to dry until tomorrow when I can add color and maybe glass.

The inlay is sanded smooth and the first layer of dye is applied to the gourd. Then crushed glass is added in the remaining channel. Now it cures until tomorrow, when I can seal the gourd and shine everything up.

~ Double Treble Clef & Celtic Blue Triskel ~

Pencil work and initial carving (and a very bad incident with a wood burner)

Dye layers added and the painting before glass

Glass added, but the gourds are not varnished yet.

Varnish added. Change to Double Treble Clefs - glass neck instead of bad burning.

Final pieces - Double Treble Clef & Celtic Blue Triskel
